Electromagnetism

Numerical modeling of random fields and reverberating structures

Description
Random electromagnetic fields are of interests in those situations where the source, the victim equipment and the coupling channel exhibit random position and orientation. The capability to predict well the statistical properties of such situations is of interest in many practical applications. For example, reverberation chambers are electrically large cavities where the electromagnetic field is statistically uniform, isotropic and depolarized. Their development has recently grown for the generation of complex testing environments in the field of antenna characterization, wireless device testing, shielding effectiveness evaluation in enclosures and cables. The research activity has a twofold goal. The first is the accurate characterization of the chamber field in terms of statistical properties varying the excitation condition and the loading factor. Also stirrer characterization, including optimal design, is a hot research topic. The second aspect concerns the numerical and experimental analysis of the coupling of random field into actual electronic equipments. The activity requires the development of powerful numerical tools able to accurately describe the complex geometries involved. The activity is actually carried out by accessing the facilities of CINECA, the largest Italian computing center. We have the access to high-performance computing (HPC) systems operated by CINECA, in particular to the IBM SP6 SP Power6 and Blue Gene/P.
