Optimization Methods in Management Science

Description

The Operations Research Group develops mathematical programming models and optimal/heuristic algorithms for discrete optimization problems, i.e., complex decision-making problems in which the best choice among a huge number of alternatives have to be identified.
Discrete Optimization is a cross-domain subject lying between Operations Research, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics and Engineering with applications arising in several domains such as software engineering, manufacturing (production planning and scheduling), transportation and logistics.
The main research topics addressed by the OR group are Integer programming, discrete reformulation, solution of large-scale models by column generation and branch–and–price algorithms, multi-objective programming, simulation-optimization.
The main applications the OR group developed over the years concern packing and cutting problems (Sheet cutting and pattern sequencing), crew scheduling and routing problems in public transport.
